Mission Statement:
Hood River Library supports learning, personal development, enrichment, recreation, and an overall informed citizenry by providing the public with access to a vast array of ideas and information in a professional, timely, and friendly manner. The library also provides a venue for the community to gather for meetings, entertainment, and cultural programs.
A Member of Gorge LINK Consortium:
Hood River County Library is a member of the Gorge LINK consortium, which is made up of public, school, and medical libraries in three counties, sharing an automated circulation and cataloging system. The Gorge LINK database lists more than 188,000 items that can be accessed through the computer catalog. Patrons may request items from other libraries, which are then delivered to the library by courier on a weekly basis.
History:
Hood River County Library enjoys a long history of support from the community. In 1908, the women of Hood River decided they wanted a library and petitioned for the money to buy books. By 1913, construction of a library building was realized with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation.
The library was designed in the Jacobethan style and opened in 1914 with a collection of 3,000 books. In 1998, the Hood River Library Foundation was formed and a capital-fund-raising drive to renovate and expand the library began.
The new library opened in 2003 after $1,300,000 was raised through gifts and grants to supplement the $3,000,000 bond passed by the voters. In 2005, the new Georgiana Smith Park was completed after a $250,000 fund-raising drive.
Library Board:
The Library Board is an advisory board appointed by the Hood River County Commissioners to represent the community in matters of library service. They are officially responsible for the review of library operations. The Library Board looks at both the long-term and short-range library service issues, develops strategies, implements policies, and advocates for the Library both to the County Commission and the community.
Library Board members: John Marker (Chair), Timothy Farrell, Barbara Keir, Kat Masek, and Keith Harding.
Hood River County Library's professional and friendly staff is eager to serve you!
