Library Hour Changes

The Hood River County Libraries hours were reduced July 1, 2009. The Hood River Library is now open Tuesdays & Wednesday 10:30-7:00, Thursdays & Fridays 10:30-5:00, Saturdays 1:00-5:00, Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Cascade Locks Branch Library is open Tuesdays 10:00-2:00, Wednesdays & Fridays 2:00-5:00, and Thursdays 2:00-7:00. Parkdale Branch Library is open Tuesdays & Wednesdays 2:00-5:00, and Thursdays 3:00-7:00.

Summer Reading Program Events

The Summer Reading Program for ages 5-17 is in full swing with over 200 children registered. This year we have a program called “Building Readers” which has over 50 babies, toddlers, and preschoolers registered. It’s not too late to register at the Children’s Desk.

If your child has read to Levels 1, 2, 3, or 4, come in and redeem your prizes.  If your pre-reader has accomplished several of the tasks on the game board, they can pick a prize out of our special prize box for our littlest patrons.

Wednesday Afternoon Creative Club is held in the children’s room at 2:00pm. Open to all ages. Learn about creative arts through hands-on activities.

We have Open Studio in the Creative Corner on Saturdays from 2:00-4:00pm. It is unstructured, so we ask you supervise your children and clean up afterwards.

We the People and Picturing America

The Hood River County Library is one of 4,000 libraries across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) to receive free hardcover editions of seventeen classic books as part of the We the People Bookshelf grant program. The award is part of the NEH’s We the People initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture.

“Picturing America” is this year’s theme, which contains the following books:

In addition, the library was awarded the Picturing America collection by the National Endowment for the Humanities which will be on display downstairs in Library Lane. Picturing America is composed of forty works of art spanning several centuries—all by American painters, sculptors, photographers, and architects.
